This dual purpose County office is charged with (1) enforcing the State Noxious Weed Law within the County boundaries and (2) providing a collection site for the environmentally safe disposal of household hazardous waste.

COTTON AND GRAPE GROWERS IN MARION COUNTY SHOULD CONTACT THE NOXIOUS WEED OFFICE TO PROTECT THEIR SENSITIVE CROPS FROM DAMAGE BY HERBICIDES BEING APPLIED TO ROADSIDES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY.

The Kansas Legislature has declared 12 weeds as noxious. They are:

Musk thistle                                   Field Bindweed

Canada thistle                                    Leafy spurge

Russian knapweed                             Kudzu

Bur ragweed                                     Quackgrass             

Sericea lespedeza                           Pignut

Johnsongrass                                  Hoary cress

Two additional weeds are County optional, Multiflora Rose and Bull Thistle. Neither has been declared noxious by Marion County.

The four weeds listed in bold type above are the ones currently infesting Marion County. Leafy spurge and hoary cress have been found and treated in isolated spots and are being monitored for re-growth.

Chemicals available at the Noxious Weed Office are for the treatment of noxious weeds only. All sales are final. When purchasing chemicals at the Weed Office, bring your checkbook or the exact amount of cash (we cannot make change), the name of the owner, operator, applicator, legal description of the land, name of weed to be treated and per acre amount of application.

Cost Share Certificates are also available from this office. These act as discount coupons for purchase of approved chemicals from chemical dealers. These certificates shall be issued prior to the chemical purchase.

Before issuing a cost share certificate, the weed office needs to know the name of the landowner and operator, name of the applicator, type of weed infestation, legal description of the ground, per acre rate of chemical application, and number of acres to be treated.

The current charge for weed treatment on private land in the county is $20.00 per hour. If the noxious weeds are infesting a field where the crop would be damaged by the applied herbicide, i.e. musk thistle in alfalfa, or if the infestation is unreachable by truck, ATV, or handgun, then the rate for pulling heads, chopping down and/or digging up plants will be $25.00 per hour for each employee used.

MARION COUNTY HHW FACILITY:

The Marion County Household Hazardous Waste facility, located at 141 N. Coble, in Marion, is open every Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to receive Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). HHW can also be dropped off on other days by appointment.  Due to the restrictions KDHE places on the types of waste this facility can receive and/or store we ask that waste not be left at the facility after hours. Also available for use is the Mobile Collection Unit which is brought to other cities in the county at prearranged times for HHW collection. The City of Hillsboro has cabinets available for flammable and corrosive collections at their recycling center.

The Mobile Collection Unit is scheduled for pickups in both spring and fall.

When determining what should be brought to the HHW facility, you should look for products labeled, DANGER, POISON, WARNING, CAUTION. This facility does NOT take UNKNOWN materials. Please ensure that all containers are labeled as to contents. Also containers should be in good condition. If they are not then they should be over-packaged in a some manner to prevent spillage while in transit or at the HHW facility.

• Smoke Alarms
• Fire Extinguishers

Some products can be safely disposed of in your trash. Latex or water based paint that has dried out can be disposed of in the trash. Many cleaning products can be allowed to evaporate in small amounts (one pint or less) in the open air, away from flame, people, or animals. Check the product label for instructions on the safe disposal of empty containers of other types of household waste.  Empty household pesticide containers may be wrapped in newspaper and disposed of in the trash.
